The Hill Race
Just like Greek marathon runners, the original hill runners may well have been those chosen by their King or Chieftan to carry important messages across Scotland, or indeed across the border. Oban’s Hill Race is run over 3 miles with a total ascent of 600 feet. The Hill Race is one of the highlights of the games with the crowds enthusiastically cheering the winner’s final exhausting circuit.
A number of other athletic events take place during the day, including sprint and middle distance races from 100m to 3200m. Then there are the long jump, high jump and triple jump competitions, children’s and visitors’ races.
Prizes are awarded for all events, in most cases for 1st, 2nd and 3rd, but for some cases, up to 6th place. The value of the prize is published in the programme.
